A Jazz Piano Christmas

Original interpretations of holiday favorites performed in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C This year’s lineup includes Brazilian pianist and singer, Eliane Elias; Afro-Cuban jazz pianist and composer, Arturo O’Farrill; prolific pianist and composer of Latin and world music, Rebeca Mauleón; and New Orlean’s own premier modern jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis.

The Pleasures of Winter
Saturday, December 20 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 21 at 7:00 a.m.

A winter holiday music special hosted by folk duo Jay Ungar & Molly Mason & special guests. The music includes fiddle tunes, vintage jazz, beautiful waltzes and original songs, all with a seasonal flavor.

A Paul Winter Solstice Concert
Saturday, December 20 at 9:00 p.m.

The extraordinary acoustics of New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine highlight the music of the Winter Consort with Eugene Friesen, Paul Sullivan and Brazilian percussionist Cafè leading us through the longest night of the year, with singer/guitarist Renato Braz and "Icarus" double-reed man Paul McCandless. This year's celebration debuts Apache singer John-Carlos Perea and musical performances from the 2008 Grammy winning CD Crestone.

Tinsel Tales from NPR

This program features stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk — these and other NPR voices, past and present, tell stories of the season. Hosted by NPR’s Lynn Neary.

Christmas with Morehouse & Spellman
Tuesday, December 23 at 9:00 p.m. and December 24 at 10:00 p.m.

One of the great holiday traditions in America, the choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges — two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation — get together to present a spine-tingling concert program.

WPSU’s own classical hosts, Bob Barton and Kris Allen, and morning news anchor Steve Biddle host a very eclectic selection of holiday music from many genres to help you celebrate in style!

A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
Wednesday, December 24 at 10:00 a.m.

The legendary live music and spoken-word broadcast from the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. Since 1928, this service of Biblical readings with choral and organ selections has been broadcast live by the BBC. It is now a treasured worldwide Christmas Eve tradition.

Songs of Joy and Peace: The Yo-Yo Ma Holiday Party
Wednesday, December 24 at 2:00 p.m. and Thursday, December 25 at 7:00 p.m.

A holiday jam session featuring Yo-Yo Ma in with his favorite musicians from around the world. Guests include James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, Paquito d'Rivera, Chris Thile, Sergio Assad, Chris Botti and others.

The Capitol Steps New Year's Special
Saturday, December 27 at noon and Wednesday, December 31 at 7:00 p.m.

Remember a year of campaign and suffering with musical political satire, recorded live in Washington, DC.

Toast of the Nation
Wednesday, December 31 at 8:00 p.m.

Count down to 2009 this New Year's Eve with live jazz on Toast of the Nation. Party with live music from coast to coast, from a Sonicbloom in Boston to a Pink Martini in Los Angeles, from ribs and Mingus in New York to black-eyes peas and a licorice stick in New Orleans, Toast of the Nation presents live music with four midnights!
